Betting in South Africa: key facts

Minimum age18
RegulatorLand-based casinos in South Africa are licensed by the nine provincial gambling authorities. The National Gambling Board oversees the system nationally but does not issue operating licences itself. Kimberley sits in the Northern Cape, so the provincial authority for this floor is the Northern Cape Gambling Board.

Online, only sports and horse-racing betting with a bookmaker licensed by a provincial gambling board is lawful in South Africa; interactive online casino games are not licensed here. A physical casino floor is a separate and fully licensed setting, which is why every page on this site describes a visit to a building on the N12 rather than an internet account.

Planning a visit, step by step

  1. Find the complex on the N12 at Phakamile Mabija Road, on the southern approach to Kimberley and directly across from the Kimberley Golf Club, whose course dates back to 1890.
  2. Check the clock before you drive: the slot floor runs from 09:00 to 02:00 daily, but the tables only open at 17:00, so a lunchtime visit is a slots-only visit.
  3. Bring a green ID book, a smart ID card, a driving licence or a passport. The gaming floor is for visitors aged 18 and over and staff check at the entrance and again at the cash desk.
  4. Decide before you walk in what the evening is worth to you, and treat that figure as the price of the entertainment rather than money you expect to see again.
  5. Leave time for the rest of the complex: Harvest Grill and Wine, Bar 129, the spa and the children's area are all under the same roof, and the Big Hole is a short drive away in the city centre.

Before you go

Flamingo Casino is a town casino rather than a resort. There is no hotel on the property: the complex holds the gaming floor, two eating and drinking venues, a spa and a children's area, and the accommodation sits next door and in the city a few minutes away.

  • Hours — slots 09:00 to 02:00 daily, tables 17:00 to 01:30, cash desk 09:00 to 01:30. The three do not run in step, and that catches out first-time visitors.
  • Cash — everything on the floor is priced in rand, and the machines are coinless: credit is loaded onto a card at the cash desk instead of fed in as coins.
  • Theme — the interior is built around the diamond rush that made Kimberley, which is also where the Barnato Room, the members' Salon Prive, takes its name.
  • Bookings and current promotions — this is an independent guide, so confirm restaurant bookings, function dates and any running promotion with the venue itself.

What the venue actually is

Flamingo Casino is a town casino rather than a resort, and that shapes everything about a visit. There is no hotel on the property: the complex holds the gaming floor, two eating and drinking venues, a spa and a supervised children's area, and beds are found next door or a few minutes away in the city. Visitors treat it as an evening out in Kimberley rather than as a destination in itself.

The interior is themed on the diamond rush that created the city in the 1870s, and the theme is not only decorative — the Barnato Room, the members' Salon Prive slot area, is named after one of the diggers-turned-magnates of that era. The complex sits on the southern approach on the N12, opposite a golf course that has been played since 1890.

The three clocks that run the floor

More visits are spoiled by the timetable than by anything else here. The slot floor opens at 09:00 and runs to 02:00. The 7 tables open at 17:00 and close at 01:30. The cash desk works 09:00 to 01:30. Those three lines explain why a lunchtime arrival finds only machines, and why the last half hour of the slot floor is the wrong time to be holding credit on a card.

Build the evening backwards from 01:30 instead of forwards from the door and none of it is a problem: arrive in the late afternoon, eat at the grill, play the tables when they open, and settle up before the desk closes. That sequence also suits anyone driving back out of town the same night.

How to use this guide

Every page here answers one practical question about visiting: what the door checks, what the floor holds, how money goes in and how it comes back out, and what the group's app does. We publish no prize figures and no promotional amounts, because those change every season and a stale number reads as a promise. Current promotions, restaurant bookings and exact hours belong to the venue and should be confirmed there.

Gambling is for visitors aged 18 and over. If it stops being fun, the National Responsible Gambling Programme runs a free 24-hour counselling line on 0800 006 008, a WhatsApp channel on 076 675 0710 and free self-exclusion sessions, and self-exclusion can also be arranged through the venue or the provincial gambling authority.

The diamond rush the venue is themed on

Kimberley exists because of what was found on a farm called Vooruitzicht in 1871. Within a year thousands of diggers were working a hill that became the Big Hole, and the settlement that grew around it turned into the largest town in the interior of southern Africa.

The Big Hole was excavated by hand until 1914 and measures roughly 463 m across at the surface, which still makes it the landmark every visitor to the city is sent to see. The Kimberley Mine Museum sits on its rim in the city centre, a short drive from the casino.

The names of that era survive in the city and inside the venue: the Barnato Room, the members' Salon Prive, carries the name of one of the rivals who fought for control of the diggings in the 1880s. The casino's interior leans on the same history for its look.

The floor keeps its own hours: slots close at 02:00 and the tables at 01:30. Online platforms run around the clock — check what is licensed where you are before you play, and keep it to money you can afford to lose.
