The diamond rush the venue is themed on
Kimberley exists because of what was found on a farm called Vooruitzicht in 1871. Within a year thousands of diggers were working a hill that became the Big Hole, and the settlement that grew around it turned into the largest town in the interior of southern Africa.
The Big Hole was excavated by hand until 1914 and measures roughly 463 m across at the surface, which still makes it the landmark every visitor to the city is sent to see. The Kimberley Mine Museum sits on its rim in the city centre, a short drive from the casino.
The names of that era survive in the city and inside the venue: the Barnato Room, the members' Salon Prive, carries the name of one of the rivals who fought for control of the diggings in the 1880s. The casino's interior leans on the same history for its look.
